ADULT BOOK CLUB

The Book Group will meet in August.

Wednesday, Aug 27th at 6:00 p.m.

Book selection: White Ghost Girls

by, Alice Greenway

From Booklist:

*Starred Review* This is a novel about memory and loss and, most of all, yearning. Two sisters, bold Frankie and watchful Kate, come of age in Hong Kong during the summer of 1967. Their father is a war photographer who is away working for long stretches in Vietnam. Their emotionally distant mother spends her time waiting for her husband's visits. The girls are cared for by a sharp-tongued amah who calls them gwaimui, or "white ghost girls."

Copies are available at the Circulation Desk.

LIBRARY BOARD MEETING

No board meeting this month.

Construction of the elevator has started!

We ask that you temporarily use the south side ramp or the Milton Ave. entrances. All story time programs will be held as scheduled. Thank you for your patience!

Library Receives Construction Grant

from N.Y.S. Library: The New York State Legislature provided an appropriation of $14 million in capital funds for public library construction in the 2006-2007 State Budget. (These funds are separate from the annual $800,000 allocation for public library construction.) Libraries could apply for a construction grant that could fund up to 50 percent of a project. The minimum grant award was $2,500 (for a total project cost of $5,000 with matching funds from the library). The New York State Library awarded 201 Public Library Construction Grants to public libraries and public library systems.

A new elevator and entryway will be constructed on the northwest side of the building. The building will then be completely handicapped accessible. The project will be an addition on the current building and will include an elevator shaft, mechanical room and a vestibule surrounding the outside entrance. Hopefully the project will be completed by the beginning of the busy summer season.
